Goshdarnit, these lenses cannot be afforded by the everyday Joe Sixpack.
No, but they’re not really targeted at Joe Sixpack either. One has to be a mature photographer just to handle them.
The sad realization I’m coming to is that they are priced appropriately for what they are.
Take my Zeiss 100mm Planar for instance. It sells for a little under half the price of the APO-Summicron 90mm, the most direct competitor. Turns out the Zeiss has some compromises that affect how you use it, and those are compromises the APO-Summicron doesn’t have. It’s the same story behind each lens.
